Hello, I am wondering if anyone else has been noticing a rise in hostility toward the disabled on the Internet?
On one website I frequent, I mentioned I was disabled in passing. Since that time, I have been threatened with physical violence on numerous occasions, most recently by a site moderator who threatened to "beat me to the gutter" in a private exchange.
It is a fairly casual site and the language can be quite bawdy, and I am used to giving and receiving insults, but not the outright threats of violence. One person told me, "I wish you were not in a wheelchair just so I could lay the beating on you. . ." even though I have told them that I am not in a wheelchair.
Another said, "I said battling wits with him would be like boxing a paraplegic and I remember him trying to shame me when the little emotional tampon that he is, told me he was a cripple. Nothing like a guy in a wheel chair talkin $%*& ya know."
I went to the site owners and complained that this fell under hate speech, so the banned me from the forum.
Is it just me, or has it become acceptable to target the disabled?

i am not insulting u, judgeing, r otherwise,but 2 me, u seem 2 b a little adverse 2 paraplegics, i.e. boxing with 1, n the " i told him i was not in a wheelchair", do u think it would have ma ny difference if u had said u were, i don`t, n i have never heared of ny site moderators being so vile n rude, unless u started the insults.If all u say is true, [i am not calling u a lier] Then i think u should Name n Shame the moderator n the site. I would, still i am sorry this happend 2 u, nothing like that has happend 2 me. i am a paraplegic, a drunk broke my back in a RTA, i was just devorced had 3 small children, sold my home, moved 2 my fathers house. met a vely man, got wed n 12mths lata had a healthy baby boy, i drive everywhere alone, i used 2 keep 3 horses, i don`t feel ny different than my friends, i am just sat down most of the time. I can do most things i could b4, i am alot more active than some people i know, i take people 2 hosp. 4 appts. r just 4 days out, i can, like all humans,b nice r nasty, that depends on how people r with me, u neva know, that nasty moderator may have been a closet paraplegic. there r quite a few about u know ...reguards n best wishes.
